Northern Ireland was the filming location of many of the northern locales in GoT (think Winterfell, Castle Black), and also the location of a large studio built to film many of the scenes. That studio (south of Belfast) has now been re-purposed as the Game of Thrones Studio Tour, and we took a day trip to explore this really amazing experience as true GoT fans! It was worth the day and we truly enjoyed exploring all of the fascinating exhibits on the tour. Plan for at least 3-4 hours to get into the weeds and enjoy the spectacular displays.
The exhibits include the artistic journals, initial sketches and models of the design teams; the actual props and sets (from the Winterfell Great Hall, the headquarters of the Night’s watch, the Hall of Faces…pretty much any scene filmed inside); costumes and jewelry; make up and prosthetics; the armoury; demonstrations of the visual and special effects and the use of green screens. So much to look at and explore! Staffed by many locals who had the opportunity to serve as “extras” in the film, it was so fun to hear their stories and experiences!
